Una banda de 10, una orquesta de 32, un coro de 20, un disco triple, casi tres horas de música fantasiástica y elevadora… Los números marean y dan las cuentas en The Epic (Brainfeeder, 2015), trilogía editada en unidad de acto, ideada y comandada por el saxofonista Kamasi Washington, “antiguo” músico de apoyo, con el que la decisión y juventud no dejan más que subrayar el logro. Y para rematarlo, The Epic es El Pasado ya que hablamos de unas grabaciones registradas en 2011 y traídas ahora para reclamar un espacio único que hierve y salpica más allá del tiesto jazzístico.
Como otras travesías desde la aldea natal hasta más allá de las brumas horizontales, según contó Kamasi, todo comenzó con un sueño: “I had this dream about a group of young warriors living in a village beneath a mountain.‘‘At the top of that mountain, there’s this gate, protected by a guard. The warriors spend all their time training to kill the guard and seize control of the gate. One by one, they are defeated by the guard. But the last warrior has the power to win, and the guard hesitates for the first time, because he sees that the warrior’s heart is good and that his own time has come.” Sucesión natural y el conocimiento para saber y aceptar que el momento ha llegado.
